Angela Gheorghiu has canceled 6 of her 8 scheduled performances of Carmen at the Met during the 2009-2010 season. Mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča will sing in Gheorghiu's stead.

Let me guess. She’s keeping the opening and the HD broadcast.

Oddly enough, I don’t think she is!

She’s Not. Gheorghiu has canceled all of the performances in December and January and kept the two she’s doing in April and May. Therefore, she’s canceled all performances with her husband as Don Jose, and kept the two she is performing with Jonas Kaufmann. It’s too early to be ill, She’s going back to the production in April so It’s probably not a director/conductor/salary dispute…I’d say it’s likely that she simply doesn’t want to work with Alagna. He gave an interview in April where he basically said that they weren’t speaking, so I’d say it’s likely that they simply don’t want to sing together.

It has been years that Angela cannot sing.
The cast now is extremely powerful:
    Micaela: Frittoli
    Carmen: Garanca
    Don Jose: Alagna
    Escamillo: Kwiecien
This is one of the best casts in recent history. When Angela was still on the cast, I told to a friend of mine that if it wasn’t for Angela, the cast was perfect. With Garanca, the cast is perfect.
If I had to pick one opera to see in NY, I would pick this one.

Interesting. I hear that Alagna and Gheorghiu are supposed to sing together at SF in the coming years, so perhaps that won’t happen after all.

I would deem that extremely unlikely.

I just wonder how long Peter Gelb’s fascination with Ms.Gheorghiu will continue.Other houses have long since shown her the door and one has to think, perhaps, it might have been better if she’d just kept going years ago when she threw the tantrum over the red wig! It looks like the only secure job at the Met is for the person who put the names on the “substitution board” in the lobby!
