Sfopera-sale * Notes *
The fourth San Francisco Opera Costume Sale continues today from 11 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon, and was clearly well-publicized. The queue started well before 9 in the morning yesterday and extended south on Indiana Street, and then west on 22nd Street all the way under the freeway (280). People waited in line for more than 3 hours to get inside, as they only allowed a certain number in at a time. One imagines and hopes that today it must be more calm, as it was an absolute circus yesterday.

There certainly was a bizarre assemblage of items within the San Francisco Opera Scene Shop. It was fun to see the costumes up close, especially those of operas one has seen on the War Memorial Stage. It is odd to think one could own the costume of Ruth Ann Swenson wore as Ophelia in Thomas’ Hamlet from the 1996 season, or a fluttery gown worn by Precious Auntie from The Bonesetter’s Daughter. It was humanizing to read the measurements of the various singers and dancers, giving the proceedings a bit of a museum-like aspect.

If one was invited to the Costume Sale Preview on Friday evening, as donors at a certain level were, this was definitely preferable. This event had no lines and cocktails were even served. I tried on four gowns in an hour: ones from La Traviata (Nelly Miricioiu as Violetta, I believe), L’Africaine (Evelyn Mandac, Ruth Ann Swenson as Inèz, 1972 and 1988), Le Nozze di Figaro (Jill Grove as Marcellina, Merola 1995), and Die Fledermaus (Sara Catarine as Adele, Western Opera Theater 1993).

* Tattling *
I mistakenly went through an unattended box that was evidently part of the rather long line to purchase items on Saturday, and was scolded roundly by the indignant woman to whom this box belonged despite the fact that she was on her mobile phone.

People waited 3 hours?! I guess if anyone is going to brave this sale & come back alive to tell the tale, you’re the one to do it. I suppose we will see a lot of operatic characters this Halloween.

I’m thoroughly confused. What’s an “unattended box” and how does somebody walk through one? And why were you scolded by a mobile phone woman who owned the “unattended box.” If one has the wrong kind of louche mind (and I do), it all sounds rather filthy.

Precious Auntie costume for sale? Well, that says something about Bonesetter’s legs.

    Did you buy anything?
I should have gone and bought a funny hat. 😦

I think the Opera Tattler went through a box, as in look inside of it, thinking it was part of the sale. Instead it belonged to a woman who was on her cell phone and then got mad at the poor Opera Tattler.
Or we could stick to the louche interpretation, that would be more fun.

People waited 5 hours even, I heard. The queue started at 6am? I am glad I went back to see the insanity. Plus that’s when I saw The Bonesetter’s Daughter costumes, I missed them the first time.

I enjoy your interpretation of this better than what actually happened. The line to purchase items was probably an hour long, and went up and down some of the aisles of costume racks. Confusingly, people had boxes of things they wanted to buy, and there were also boxes filled with hats, shoes, and fabrics that weren’t yet claimed by anyone, also in between racks of clothes.
I was mortified by my mistake, of course. But I was thoroughly overwhelmed by the whole experience.

Many of the principal costumes for the opera were for sale, I also saw the outfits for Ruth and LuLing.

I did get the Marcellina and Adele costumes.
Don’t feel too bad, I don’t think it was worth it to wait in line for 3 hours to get in and then 1 hour to get out. There will be other chances!

I got there at 10 and had about a 5 hour wait. We were almost the last ones let through. And yes it was easy to mistake a box of someone’s stuff for on sale items. The line to pay was actually about 2.5 or 3 hours long.

I got in line only a little before you but waited just under 4 hours, lots and lots of people must have showed up around then. I didn’t wait in the line to pay, so I was just guessing. Gosh, it was even scarier than I thought!

How much were the costumes selling for? It wasn’t an auction, right?

No, it wasn’t an auction. Costumes for chorus members and supers were as little as $50 and ones worn by famous singers or designed by big names $750-1000.
