So, OT, coming down to Los Angeles for the “Turn of the Screw”? 🙂 [Searching for a review of the Bay Area production was how I found your site, you didn’t like the opera at all]
Pretty grim season all in all. The Catan looks very interesting, I like his “Florencia”. Heppner? Buwahahahah? He’ll cancel for sure. That’ll be the 7th “Figaro” in 24 years, yikes. “The Turn of the Screw” is too small to play in that space, the 13 instruments just evaporate in that big hall. Oh well, it’ll be cheap to do, that seems to be the main thing.

    Woops, hit post too soon.
I found out about the announcement in the Times, when I went to the LAO website, there was nothing. I had to search for “2011” to get the press release. Who’s doing their website, that should be the top story, they can lay off hyping The Ring for a few days can’t they?

I’m concerned about The Turn of the Screw in that space, it seems like that will be challenging. I might well go, since it is in the off-season in SF! In fact, I’ll probably attend most of these, though probably not Le Nozze.

It is odd that the LA Opera site was still promoting the 2009-2010 season yesterday.

A lean season indeed for L.A. Opera. But it’s to be expected with the county bailing them out after a serious case of misbudgeting the Ring cycle.
of the singers look promising. I’m not sure making an opera of “Il Postino” is such a good idea. Sounds like rather a bore. But Domingo needs a vehicle to help bail out his own company, I guess.
A potential Heppner cancellation may not be so bad. After hearing him in “Queen of Spades” at the Met last year, I wonder if his best singing years are behind him. Could have been an off night, but with his history of vocal issues, I wonder. And he seems to have fallen off the radar.
Nice to see “Turco in Italia” done in the U.S.. I think it’s one of Rossini’s better operas, but for whatever reason it’s hardly ever done.
I imagine L.A. Opera will continue to have some lean seasons for the next few years as it gets its finances together. I think Domingo needs to hand over the reins to someone else who can actually budget and only run one company.
Or, maybe he shouldn’t be running opera companies at all. Surely he brings star power, but has the level of artistic merit risen? Other than James Conlon’s celebrated conducting, what’s been the upshot of Domingo’s directorship at either of his companies?
