Are people less excited about the SFS and MTT? I haven’t attended a concert there is 2 or 3 years. I would like to see new guests. People like Boulez, Muti, Abbado, Mariss Jansons (his concert with the Concertgebouw here was one of the best symphonic concerts that I attended in my life). If the SFS is a world-class orchestra, why doesn’t this people stop here once in a while? Year after year, we have the same guests. I noticed, btw, that we won’t have Ashkenazy this year. Did the city got tired of him? If he could come here and play piano (something that he doesn’t do anymore), it would be a different story… Speaking of that, what about Pollini? He canceled a concert scheduled a few years ago and we never heard of him anymore.
The only Mahler that I would make me dislocate to Davies Symphony Hall is Mahler #3. That was a great concert! Very hard to conceive, so that’s why I take is a treat.
I think that this “Les Noces” may be interesting. What else?

I’ve never heard El Nino or Rothko Chapel live, so I’m excited about those. I must admit to being bummed that MTT is conducting the latter. Overall, it seems a ho hum season with an awful lot of “audience favorites” and at least as much MTT. It seems SFS and SFO have lost adventurousness.

I’m jealous, it’s a fantastic programme….bit far to me to come though, from the UK! 🙂
I hope to see reviews of the following when they come around:
April 7-9 2011: Vänskä conducts Mendelssohn and Vaughan Williams
June 16-19 2011: MTT conducts Bartók, Tchaikovsky; Yuja Wang, piano

I am most interested in Vänskä and Adams, and in some of the soloists and guests. Personally I do find this more exciting than the SF Opera season.

Those two do look interesting. MTT seemed to do well over the weekend in the Kissine, so maybe he’ll be fine in Rothko Chapel.

Yuja Wang makes me feel uncomfortable, but perhaps I should give her another listen. Definitely going to the Vänskä.
