Aida-coliseum-911   * Notes *
The orchestra sounded lovely under Nicola Luisotti in the final dress rehearsal of San Francisco Opera's Aida yesterday afternoon. The woodwinds were particularly good, especially the oboe and clarinet. Zandra Rhodes' bright and colorful production is coming together, and it was nice to see everyone transformed and everything in order after attending three previous rehearsals. There is some beautiful singing, but it might just be Dolora Zajick's show, as her Amneris thus far has been commanding. The opera opens the 2010-2011 season this Friday, and by all indications, it should be a wonderful spectacle.

The line to get into the rehearsal formed before noon. Most of the attendees in Box B were rather ill-behaved. Not only did some arrive after the music started, was there even talking, and removal of shoes. The woman next to me wore an enormous floppy hat that she thankfully removed during the actual performance. She may have texted whilst no music was occurring, but it was difficult to discern given that she was on my right side.

There was a shocking amount of hooting and hollering after arias and at the end of scenes. Luisotti had to silence the audience after Act I with "I'm sorry to inconvenience you, but we have to start now." He did not have his customary white sweater on during the performance. Thankfully it was draped over his navy blue shirt when he came out to bow.

So was this something that was open to the public? I’m just curious how you know about these things … or maybe it’s for donors or special invitation? (I’m not on SF Opera’s radar at ALL, despite blogging about them a bit. I just wonder how all this works … not that I could have gone anyway, due to teaching.)
I’m really looking forward to hearing the new oboist. I hear he’s absolutely fantastic!

yes, box B was atrocious. Who were all those people and how on earth did they get in? They should have been stopped at the gate, with fire hoses. There is less chatter in the House of Commons, for goodness sakes.
As for the production, this observer agrees with Tattler. San Francisco is in for a real treat.

I am not really sure how most of the people got invited to this event, but there were tons of people in the Grand Tier and Dress Circle.
This time, I got in as a donor, not the press: http://sfopera.com/p/?mID=134&edID=627&eventtypeid=
The new oboist is excellent. Loved hearing him!

I am hoping that I can at least find a quiet spot in standing room, perhaps later in the season. It is such a fun production!

My dear narwhal – perhaps the woman in the floppy hat was FourSquaring furiously on her iPhone, trying desperately to oust you as the Mayor of War Memorial.

I got in with tickets given to me by a subscriber who could not use them. I have also received dress rehearsal tickets as a subscriber myself. There seemed to be more people than usual at this event, though.

Great review…. I sat in “our” Row E….and Dolora was just SO AMAZING…. I really liked everyone except “you know who”…. at least her pitch was somewhat better…. Orchestra and Chorus were great…..and HUNGRY…..it was a real feeding frenzy…
There WERE a lot of people in attendance… I assumed they were $$$$ donors and season ticket holders….

Dolara Zajick ALWAYS steals the show with that great, monster voice, no matter what she’s singing. I always feel a little sorry for the sopranos who have to sing alongside her.
I was getting ready for the Symphony opening that evening and I don’t much like watching dress rehearsals because if the singers are smart, they usually mark a bit with their voices. Plus, nobody invited me, and I’ve never been so insulted in my life. I did notice that there were three different huge lines with different entrances ringing the opera house Tuesday afternoon. One must have been for donors, another subscribers, another friends & family of the cast. It’s a wonder if there will be anybody left to see the actual show. Are you going to Opening Night, by the way?

I don’t like Carosi either. She’s so stiff and where’s the acting?!? When Aida and Radames get buried alive, one would think two people who are madly in love would look at each other adoringly as opposed staring down the audience. That was totally awkward. The whole time I wanted to scream at them “don’t look at us, look at your dying lover!!!” Plus Carosi’s mouth is really just too big. Every time she opened it I was afraid she’d swallow the entire theater. Scare!
Dolora is hands down the STAR of the show.

Saw sfmike’s photos of you at the opening: you looked splendid! I hope it was a great time. Might it be possible for you to give me some tips on getting standing room tix? I REALLY want to see Aida (a Dolora AND Zandra show? Count me in!), but I fear the standing room instructions on the website probably leave out the really important details (official word is usually lacking in what really counts, I find). Thanks and you really looked breathtaking!

Thank you! Standing room for this is not going to be too crazy, judging from the first night. You are best off making a day of it, getting the the standing room line at about 9-9:30am on Saturday or Sunday. The most important part is that you will need to get to the standing room line on Grove exactly 70 minutes before the show, so you can secure a good spot on the railing.
