Grimaud, Helene 4x4 * Notes *
Kirill Karabits made a promising conducting debut at San Francisco Symphony this week in a program of Silvestrov's Elegie, Schumann's Piano Concerto, and Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances. Last night's performance began with the piece by Silvestrov, scored for string orchestra. The small ensemble played with grace and the work was rather pretty. Next came the Schumann, the pianist Hélène Grimaud was perhaps ungainly, but perfectly precise and never boring. She listened to the orchestra but sounded quite distinct from the other instruments. The Rachmaninoff dances were fluid and adroit. The trumpets and trombones were clean but slightly harsh. The woodwinds were particularly beautiful.

* Tattling *
The audience on the orchestra level was exceedingly well-behaved for the first half of the performance, especially when Grimaud was playing. Almost no one left during intermission, but light talking was noted during Rachmaninoff, and more than one person fell asleep.

    The San Francisco audiences should be forgiven, Rach’s Symphonic Dances are as long as they are boring to this overopinionated person’s ears.

    Happy New Year, dear “OT”! I was there…and really loved the programme. Schumann and Rachmaninoff’s pieces being some of my favourites. I was PLEASANTLY surprised by the audience’s good behaviour. I never felt Ms. Grimaud “ungainly”….in these days of too-tight strapless dresses, it was refreshing to see an artist elegantly (but comfortably) dressed….her playing was true, from the heart – and I was incredibly moved. Maestro Karabits (though no “Maestro Nikki”, was exhuberent and true to the respective scores….. I had a most enjoyable time!
    Happy New Year!

    Hats off to Ms. Grimaud who faced serious illness last year (a particularly virulent form of pneumonia) and whose Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, NY is under legal attack by adjacent landowners.

    I thought the dances were amusing. Played well, in any case.

    Happy New Year, Robin! Grimaud does look elegant, and she is not too flashy, which I appreciate. As far as being ungainly, I meant in her playing, something about it is heavy? I liked her Bartók more than her Schumann.

    I didn’t hear about that pneumonia or the Wolf Conservation Center, how horrible!
