Trovatore-met-04302011  * Notes *
The last performance of Il Trovatore at the Metropolitan Opera was Saturday's matinee. Since I have seen seemed David McVicar's production several times in San Francisco, it seemed best to simply listen at a score desk today.

Conductor Marco Armiliato had the orchestra sounding spirited. The racing tempi were infused with energy. The dynamics were not always dramatic, at times pianissimo was not terribly distinct from forte. Stefan KocÑn was a dry Ferrando, but with good volume. I had trouble hearing Maria Zichak's musical line as Inez when she sang with Sondra Radvanovsky (Leonora) and the orchestra in Part I. The latter interpreted the emotional content of the text with clarity, and could always be heard. Dmitri Hvorostovsky (di Luna) has a lovely timbre but has a tendency to gasp when breathing. While Marcelo Álvarez was plaintive as Manrico, he almost seemed to choke on a note in "Ah, sì ben mio." Perhaps this was intentional, it did give this reviewer a physical sensation of being strangled. Dolora Zajick (pictured above, © Ken Howard/Metropolitan Opera) was most impressive as Azucena. The madness of the character came through, with passion and without ugliness.

* Tattling *
Though most of the audience was respectful and silent, someone left his or her mobile phone on and it rang during a rest with a fermata in Part 2. One would think being broadcast live in high definition would be incentive enough to turn off electronic devices.

I didnt think Hvorostovsky gasped. I was enthusiastic about his singing AND acting. Alvarez sang beautifully most of the time. All of the main part of the cast were great.

Listened to the broadcast…..having seen it (like you) many times at SFO, I could easily picture what was going on. I think Dimitri DOES have some breathing problems – as he did in SF…still, the voice is beautiful enough (as is he) that most will overlook it. Sondra was solid. Alvarez was ok… Dolora…..ah, just spectactular. I hope we have her back for something (anything) in the not-so-distant future. Her “Countess” in “Pique Dame” was astounding!Maestro Armiliato was good – but does not have the
“I am the Fire” attitude of Nikki… ya know, that’s a good and a bad thing…
One thing I can say – this opera has NEVER been a favourite of mine…. but, I liked it more this time around.

I might have been sensitive to Hvorostovsky’s breathing because I wasn’t watching him. However, I have heard him sing at least a half dozen times in the last 3 or 4 years, and I do find I can hear his breaths very distinctly. His voice does have very pleasant resonances and his acting is strong (though obviously for this performance, I can’t say much about that).
Álvarez did a decent job, it is true. He did sound very sweet whenever “dolce” was marked in the score.

Armiliato is good, but I think we both are a bit biased toward Luisotti. πŸ™‚

Dmitri has always been a loud mouth-breather. It bothers me quite a bit but I try to ignore it. I was in 2nd row when he sang a recital in Boston a few months ago, and he breathed just as loud when he’s singing Russian songs. It’s these big breaths he takes in that allows him to sing such long legato lines!

I guess I never noticed until the last Simon Boccanegra at SF Opera, and now it is hard for me to ignore.

I heard the live radio streming and I enjoyed it very much. All the singers gave their best…Radvanovsky sang the role with the beauty and emotional transport that we all know, Dolora Zajick still has a very good and powerful voice, Hvorostovsky sang I think at the best that night because I heard the other performance too and he was much better on saturday than on wednesday, Alvarez I think was the weakest point of the cast, but his aria Ah si ben mio was done really in a beautiful way.
Two days after the performance I found loads of videos on YT so I could also enjoy the realistic, and a bit cruel, McVicar’s production visually too. The costumes were wonderful I believe! Well…since it was recorded (there are whispers about a DVD of this production), I bet this will remain as an historical staging of Verdi’s opera!
ps: about Hvorostovsky’s breathing…yes…he does breth loudly but what a beautiful legato and phrasing!
oh…and here the YT playlist ti watch at the WHOLE performance! http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=4F40C6D0AB91126C

    I forgot…I didn’t like at all Armiliato’s conducting…Verdi is not a brass band! πŸ™‚

Thanks for the youtube video. I do like this production, and it was a strong performance with great singers.
It is true, the legato lines of Hvorostovsky’s singing are beautiful. I think the breathing was particularly obvious without seeing the performance.
