Enchanted-island-costanzo

Anthony Roth Costanzo (pictured left, photograph by Ken Howard), who has been singing Ferdinand in the Metropolitan Opera's The Enchanted Island this season, will replace David Daniels as Prospero in tomorrow's performance of that opera. Jeffrey Mandelbaum will in turn replace Costanzo as Ferdinand. Daniels, who is ill, was also replaced for part of the January 12 performance, and all of the January 14 performance.

I am always sorry to learn that a treasured performer is unwell… yet it may explain why, in my hearing last Saturday (Met radio broadcast), Mr Daniels sounded less than at his best. I hope he will recover completely and soon.
I enjoyed the pastiche very much, probably because I knew all of the Händel tunes and could sing along (albeit with the words from the original pieces, ha ha). Correctly recognized the Vivaldi and Rameau instances, as well — Enjoyment Thru Smugness may not be totally honorable, but it is still enjoyable!
I thought Ms DiDonato ripped through her arias brilliantly, and that the rest of the cast was strong and seemed to be having a good time. Mr. Domingo continues to amaze and delight me tremendously. It’s nice to end the opera-day happy for a change…
