Reviews of San Francisco Opera's Attila (Act II Scene 2 pictured left with Nathaniel Peake as Uldino, Diego Torre as Foresto, Lucrecia Garcia as Odabella, Quinn Kelsey as Ezio, and Ferruccio Furlanetto as Attila; photograph by Cory Weaver) have been, on the whole, positive.

I saw this production on June 20th and had to leave during intermission: There was a very high-pitched squeal coming from some sort of amplification that was like the proverbial finger nail on the chalk board! Since when did any sort of amplification become necessary for live opera? The only thing that comes to mind is that perhaps the performance was being recorded for possible play-back at some point. All together, a definite buzz-kill!

I’m pretty certain they’ve started using amplification for some if not all singers. To be fair, I think they’re also amplifying the orchestra. I know that for Nixon in China, at least Mao’s wife is amplified, but I read somewhere they all were.
