The production was wonderful and the singing was mostly good, but Gockley’s translation was miserable–he went to a rhyming dictionary and pulled out the most cliched rhymes imaginable like “ocean” and “emotion.” Unless you are an accomplished poet you shouldn’t attempt to translate verse, even verse as bad as Schikaneder’s. And just because you’re the impresario at SFO, you shouldn’t take the liberty of hiring yourself for a job you’re not suited to. Next thing we know Gockley will try to perform Tamino!
