Unfortunately, it looks as though Achim Freyer’s Ring cycle and the loss of Edgar Baitzel are still weighing heavily upon Los Angeles Opera.
I might have been interested in seeing Massenet’s Thaïs out of curiosity to hear Domingo as Athanael, and I understand that Brandon Jovanovich is a very good tenor (I’ve also never seen Bizet’s Carmen). But Nino Machaidze is featured in both productions and I personally don’t like her Slavic, wobbly voice (especially at the top), so it’s enough to keep me away. Oh well.

I’m THRILLED to see LA Opera stepping out as the first opera company in America to present the incredible Einstein on the Beach. I guess BAM and Cal Performances inspired them. Has anyone seen this Billy Budd? I’ve never seen the opera. While I don’t enjoy Zambello’s typically pedestrian productions, I’m thinking about heading down for this one. OT: Thanks, as always, for your timely and pertinent posts!
