According to a press release from today the Met has canceled its Live in HD transmission of The Death of Klinghoffer scheduled for this fall. The Met's General Manager, Peter Gelb says "I'm convinced that the opera is not anti-Semitic but I've also become convinced that there is genuine concern in the international Jewish community that the live transmission of The Death of Klinghoffer would be inappropriate at this time of rising anti-Semitism, particularly in Europe."

What an incredibly cowardly position to take! Joshua Kosman did a nice piece about this silly decision in the SFChron.

Why not replace it with “The Three Shalit Abductions in the Westbank”? And don’t forget to show the smashed windows of the hearse that transported the three bodies of the murdered teens from their grave.

But they’re letting Die Meistersinger complete with the character of Beckmesser go right on ahead. Brilliant work, Mr. Gelb.
I don’t think Beckmesser is necessarily a Jewish caricature, but there’s better evidence for that than there is for the proposition that The Death of Klinghoffer is antisemitic. If antisemitism were the real concern, then it would follow that Meistersinger should be a target. But, of course, the real motive for this craven retreat is that the work gives an equal voice to the perspective of Palestinians. Like much about the use of the term “antisemitism” in modern discourse, it’s actually a code word for “treats Israel and Zionism with less than abject fawning praise”.
