Although I’ve seen the production before, I’ll definitely be catching Tales of Hoffmann for the luxury casting of Vittorio Grigolo and Diana Damrau (who I have wanted to hear live for quite a while). I’m actually surprised that Domingo isn’t singing the Four Villains as opposed to conducting in the pit. I’ve also never heard Macbeth, so I’ll probably get tickets for that as well. The Glass opera sparks my curiosity. But I’m not sure I want to take the plunge or not.
How is Sondra Radvanovsky sounding these days?

I am quite disappointed that LA Opera will not be including any Wagner operas for the third straight season. This certainly gives me pause regarding continuing as a subscriber. I do understand that the company almost went bankrupt with its magnificant avant guarde Ring Cycle a few years ago but this can be attributable to the horrid economic climate that existed at the time. LA Opera needs to regain its bold artistic daring to bolster its international reputation as a world class opera company and consider another Ring Cycle as well as including such operas as “Tristan,” “Parsifal” and “Meistersinger.” We had to go to the UK to see “Tristan”at Convent Garden in December, 2014 and saw “Meistersinger” at SF Opera in December 2015 that was a real treat. We also went to Bayreuth this past summer to see excellent avant guarde stagings of the “Ring Cycle” and “Tristan” but would have preferred to stay in LA to see these productions, as Conlon and Domingo are veritable Wagnerians. Come on, LA Opera, bring back some Wagner!

I’m also eagerly awaiting the return of the Ring Cycle. Previous rumors said that the production will be revived in 2017/18, although restaging that Ring will be tremendous work and Achim Freyer keeps himself very busy.
However, Wagner is not the only way the LA Opera can be bold. Did you see Einstein on the Beach, the Dido/Bluebeard double bill, or any of the modern operas lately (Ghosts of Versailles, Florencia en el Amazonas, etc)? What about Akhnaten coming up?

Ghosts of Versailles was fantastic. A beautiful, traditional staging that managed to be extremely creative at the same time. The audience loved it. And you just can’t go wrong with a giant pink elephant. Hope you guys in San Francisco might get to see the production.
