Sigh, at least in SF you can get bona fide contemporary opera still (Bright Sheng, John Adams) and the occasional important modernist opera. This new season in Seattle is looking awfully conservative, with Butterfly the most recent opera of the lot. Only five operas in our season here, and four of them are going to be Butterfly, Barber, Così fan tutte and Aida. Beatrice & Benedict will be interesting in a modern English language production, but it’s the only thing in English, and the only thing at all unusual on the mainstage here. I rarely see a bad production of anything here, but still, this is an uninspiring lot.
