Bonesetter-rehearsal I'm afraid that final dress rehearsal of San Francisco Opera's The Bonesetter's Daughter has left me nearly speechless, and considered summing up my reaction in exactly two words. But I certainly don't want to ruin it for you, gentle readers. Instead, I offer some images that came to mind whilst watching the production.

As I told Miss Christine today, you are the only person I feel comfortable dragging to this opera. She has been excused, but not you, oh no.

I have no idea what any of those images mean, but you’ve actually piqued my interest, so I may be joining you on Saturday. Colossal disasters are so much more interesting than mediocre disappointments (such as “Harvey Milk,” the opera, for instance). Should I arrive drunk?

    Dodaro: Is it?
sfmike: Unfortunately, this opera is pretty boring. So if you do go, yes, being drunk may be a good idea.

That’s what I thought, but I was wrong. It really is too bad you are thousands of miles away from San Francisco, because I would drag you to this as well.

Ooh! Ooh! I’m playing this game:
cheesy, sentimental, racist, amazing effects, spectacle, trapped.
Did I get the feelings right?

Good heavens. That was good, spot on. Unfortunately the images are extremely literal, they deal with what is on stage or what is sung about. Seriously, they sing about O.J., I wish I were kidding.

I was kind surprised OJ appears in the libretto since he’s not even in the book. Strange things happen.

I believe the incident depicted in the opera was in the book at a different point, when LuLing is at the doctor’s office.

Did anyone stay for the the 2nd half after intermission. Let me know if it got any better, we just couldn’t. Yes the OJ references did happen just doesn’t sound right at an opera. I think it may do better on Broadway as a musical.

Actually I was waiting for the guy in the coffin to do a Michael Jackson move. Sorry didn’t happen…

I stayed, and because I’m some sort of glutton for punishment, I went again. No, it did not improve. You are right though, a Michael Jackson move might have been just the thing.

5 words: pseudo-intellectual a-tonal exposition-fest (given the number of hyphens, your number might be different)
