David Gockley reiterated his statement from last Sunday's Bohème, that though productions might cut or would be less elaborate, San Francisco Opera would never compromise on vocal quality, despite a downturn in the economy. He also gave hints on San Francisco Opera's latest commissions, the topics include heroism and 9/11, Mary Magdalene, and Hurricane Katrina.

Mary Magdalene could be quite fascinating, unless that means "we're making an opera of the Da Vinci Code," in which I'm going to start ridiculing it right now.

I think your system is dropping apostrophes — should be we're (we are) and I'm (I am)

Typepad is being so awful, this is true.
I love the idea of a Mary Magdalene opera, but I am also afraid.

That's because you want to make lamps out of Catholics.
The topics sound like ideas he thought of while walking down the aisle to give his talk. Hideous all.
Of course, if I had any faith in their faith in the audience, the topics would be fine.

I'd like to see an MM opera done by Peter Sellars and Bill Viola.

Dodaro: What do you mean? I adore Catholics.

Sellars and Viola would be fantastic. I am so disappointed in the boring Gockley years already. Maybe Mortier can come here since he ain't going to NYCO.

It is a bit boring, but some of the singing has been quite good.

That’s totally fair. I wish his imagination would move beyond the voice. Opera can indeed be everything, but I guess not under Schlockley. Ah well…

I certainly agree. I’m also concerned that sometimes he is more interested in big names rather than in truly good voices.
