I’m quite jealous of my friend who lives in the Netherlands.

“A Dog’s Heart” is based on the Bulgakov novella? I’d be curious to hear an operatic dog. I always thought that someone missed a chance to make a movie version of this story with Danny DeVito.

It looks like you are right, though I’ve never read Bulgakov, and I really should.

De Nederlandse Opera seems to be releasing its more adventurous operas on DVD, so I hope those of us who don’t live there will get to see some of these.
For Bulgakov, The Master and Margarita is the obvious place to start. If you enjoy that you’ll like the others.

Fantastic Season… especially the idea of Lehnhoff with FANCIULLA. Amsterdam win because of the combination of rep, artist and creative.

As it happens, I have the translation from Diana Burgin and Katherine Tiernan O’Connor of The Master and the Margarita, but I am quite curious about the Pevear/Volokhonsky version too. Do you have a recommendation, as far as this goes?

I like the idea of a Master & Margarita opera even better. Besides the titular characters, we get a giant cat, the devil, Pontius Pilate & Jesus!

It’s far more exciting than what is going on at SF. The grass is always greener, I suppose.

I’m surprised there isn’t already an opera version.

There actually already is an opera based on The Master and Margarita, and possibly more than one. It took me a while to find the composer because the title was put in German as Der Meister und Margarita, but York Holler composed it. I haven’t heard it so I have no opinion. But while searching for it I came across another opera based on the book, by someone named I think Slonimsky. There were also reports that Andrew Lloyd Weber wanted to turn it into an opera or musical, a plan which I kind of hope has fallen through.
I’m not very knowledgeable about translation from the Russian but everyone I’ve read who is an expert recommends the Pevear/Volokhonsky versions — but that doesn’t mean the one you have isn’t also perfectly acceptable.

I’ve read the Pevear/Volokhonsky translations of various Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, and have really loved them, though I’m no expert either.

Given that you don’t have a car, I somehow doubt your sincerity.
