The set of Das Rheingold is still not working properly.

I saw this calamity on opening night, when everything did work, not that it made the slightest difference. On that occasion, Freyer was heavily booed, which was far better than he deserved.

I too, saw the opening night performance and it was one of the best evenings of opera I have ever experienced. Freyer was booed, but he was also heartily applauded, as he deserves to be, for creating a thrilling and groundbreaking production.
For people who are interested in where opera is going, rather than those who wish to make it a museum, this production is a revalation and should not be missed. It fully incorporates Wagner’s values concerning music and drama and serious Ring devotees as well as anyone interested in the art should see this. The cast and the conducting are also superb. Bravo LA Opera!LikeLike

I didn’t know they booed in LA, I would have liked to have been there, in that case.

I’m going to see the full cycle next year in LA, certainly am curious about it.

In all seriousness, I found it dramatically inert and musically mediocre. While all the gimmickry may not have been literally at odds with Wagner, I don’t think this approach did much to explicate things either. I can’t imagine what people thought who had never seen Rheingold before. I don’t think it is necessary to be a lover of only stodgy productions to disapprove of this one. In any event, I’ll be back for the second installment in late April, perhaps with my Ovaltine Secret Decoder Ring to make sure I understand everything.
