Sadly, mezzo-soprano Zheng Cao has been diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. Suzanna Guzmán is taking over Cao’s role of Suzuki at San Diego Opera in Madama Butterfly, which opens this weekend.

This is beyond sad. I love this woman. She was a downstairs neighbor when she was together with her old movie star boyfriend Troy Donahue, and she’s always been one of my favorite performers.
