The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain are playing at the Proms on August 18, 2009. One can even take part.

This is not something that is going to get me to the Proms, I’m afraid. I’ve already heard a ukulele band, thank you very much. I have noticed, though, that anyone playing the ukulele always looks like they are having fun. I’m a little disappointed that the folks in the promo video use the incorrect, haole pronunciation of “ukulele”. In my experience, the serious ukulele aficionados take great pains to use the Hawaiian pronunciation.

I did not think so, but I couldn’t resist posting about this. The British seem to pronounce Spanish and Italian in ways that make me cringe, so Hawai’ian seems like it would be difficult for them as well.

Don’t worry, I was quite amused by the link anyway! I guess I shouldn’t be too critical, though. I once had a Hawaii resident point out my incorrect pronunciation of “Hawai`i”.

I won’t take the Proms seriously until they have a recorder quartet perform.
