Manon-san-jose * Notes *
Opera San José's new season opened with Manon last night. The orchestra sounded clean under the baton of Joseph Marcheso. On the whole, the intonation was spotless and the soli from the woodwinds and strings were particularly nice. The organ did have a rough entrance at the beginning of Act II. Dianna Shuster's production was uncomplicated, though the part where Manon gets Des Grieux attention by hopping up on a bench and walking back and forth for entirely too long was somewhat silly. The costumes and set all looked perfectly reasonable given this opera.

The singing was even, and the singers well-matched. Silas Elash had a lot of power as the elder Des Grieux. Krassen Karagiozov was a slippery, evasive Lescaut. Alexander Boyer (Des Grieux) had some pleasant warmth, though his voice did sound a bit compressed at the top. Khori Dastoor looked lovely in the title role, her voice is icy and metallic without being too abrasive. She sang "Adieu, notre petite table" prettily. Her accent in French was somewhat noticeable, though this was true of most of the cast overall.

* Tattling *
There were some murmurs during the music, but no electronic noise. The ovation at the end was quite effusive, despite some audience attrition at the two intermissions.

    Was this your first trip to OSJ? I didn’t know you ever came down to review these. Thanks!

    In the interests of economy and time, the Cours la Reine act was eliminated, and Manon’s Gavotte put into the casino scene. No great harm done, I’d say, and much money saved, but it made the story line confusing for first-timers. The last act had many cuts but was very attractively staged, particularly the sunset effects.

    I went to OSJ’s Manon in 2002. It is probably good to get to the South Bay occasionally!

    I had totally forgotten the 2002 performances. Were they any good at all? It wasn’t that long ago … why can’t I remember it at ALL?! Yikes. Old age?
    Someone said Robert Wood conducted then … obviously I don’t remember that either. Ack.

    I wasn’t impressed by the 2002 performance I went to, but I think that had mostly to do with Massenet, not OSJ.

    Oh … I wasn’t asking for that! (But thank you!) I was just noticing you sort of altered the review. It sure does have a lot of nice oboe lines. I’m not a big fan of Manon, but as long as I have a reed it’s great fun to play the solos. (And now I’m off to the reed room to see if I can get something(s) to cooperate for tonight.)
    Btw, we go to Il Trittico tomorrow night so I’m avoiding reading your review or any others. After Friday night I’ll THEN read what you have to say. (I just hear things differently when I read reviews first. I’m just that fickle!)
