DAMN! What happened?
I saw the Dress Rehersal, and Rose seemed to be in good shape. He was marking, and you couldn’t hear him in the big low moments, but appart from that, he was okay. Is he sick?

Wait, is Silvestrelli going in for one performance or the whole run?

You were right, it’s not this Saturday. Sorry for confusing you with my ill-informed comments.

Attended the premiere tonight. Peter Rose still had trouble making himself heard in Dress Circle with his lowest notes. There is a song in Act II that really depends on his low notes and they just weren’t there. Everything else about his performance is great. His middle voice is very resonant and pleasant, too.

There is just one performance with Silvestrelli. I am curious to hear his English dialogue.

No worries! Nice to see you.

I felt that way too, but I figured part of it was because of my location beneath the boxes.

I just heard from a friend who is a super in the production. Apparently, Mr. Rose’s father passed away and he is missing a performance for the funeral. My friend seems to think the day Mr. Rose is missing is the 26th, not the 29th, but was unsure.

Yes, I heard something quite like this as well. The press release I received specifically says the Tuesday performance, but the PDF isn’t on the press page.

Dear OT,
We were in Dress Circle and still had trouble hearing Mr. Rose in some sections. If he was singing under grief, that might explain his difficulty. I’m surprised he went on at all.

The role is really quite difficult, even in the best of circumstances.

I was in upper balcony front. And I had to imagine that sustained low notes in my head. If you imagine harder, you can actually hear it in your head. That is the trick basses sometimes play. 🙂

Must keep that in mind!

Saw Silvestrelli last night (9.29) from dress circle.
Had previously seen Rose on opening night.
Rose acted nicely and made Osmin almost likeable in an obnoxious way, but he just did not have the low notes.
Silvestrelli came across as a much heavier, nastier Osmin, and although his low notes were better than Rose’s, they were not outstanding.
Overall I preferred Rose’s performance, and if he was singing under grief and/or sickness or both, that might explain a lot. I’d be happy to see him again in this role under better circs.
On another subject: Mary Dunleavy is a great singer until she tries to do the really high notes, which come out shrill and out of control.
This was a problem in both perfs that I saw.
Too bad: she’s otherwise perfect for the part.

I like Silvestrelli’s voice more than Rose’s (and I have heard both in a variety of operas), but I can see what you mean about the acting in this case.
Dunleavy can sound great, but she does have control problems, yes.
