Damrau-florez * Notes *
San Francisco Opera's La fille du régiment opened last Tuesday. The production, directed by Laurent Pelly, is outrageously silly, involving laundry, potatoes, and very large maps. Karine Girard's slapstick choreography was cute and worked well on the all the singers. The acting overall was charming and everyone looked quite comfortable. It was surprising how much French dialogue there was, but for the most part, the momentum of the absurdity kept the performance moving.

The orchestra raced through the score under Andriy Yurkevych, but managed to stay together. The chorus sounded like they were having fun. Kenneth Kellogg acted and sang convincingly with the chorus as the corporal. Meredith Arwady was an imperious Marquise de Berkenfield, her voice is dark and velvety. Diana Damrau was winsome in the title role, sprightly and darling. She did have the slightest bit of strain when singing loudly at the top of her voice, but had a pleasant suppleness otherwise. Juan Diego Flórez sang sweetly, his high C's were brilliant and not shrill in the least.

* Tattling *
There was more than one conversation going on during the music, but nothing too obnoxious to be ignored. The audience was particularly delighted by the elderly wedding chorus and by the mini tank Flórez enters on near the end.

Going tonight, I loved this production when i saw the Met Simulcast, so I can’t wait to hear Damarau.

I had some guy behind me speaking all throughout the show. Probably he had a few too many drinks at his pre-opera dinner.

You should have fun, I imagine.

Yes, that seems to happen sometimes, unfortunately.

Saw the fourth performance tonight from balcony standing room. Musically, it was just about perfect. I can’t imagine hearing a better all-around version in my lifetime. And being in the balcony, you could ignore the staging schtick unless you wanted to watch OperaVision. Great night at the opera.

I enjoyed the schtick. Too bad I don’t care much about Bel Canto, but I do admit it is a great cast.

I went to the 10/22 performance.
It was really a privilege to see a production with that level of detail. Production design, costumes, direction, choreography, lighting, everything was world-class.
The chorus has one of their best performances I’ve ever seen. Damrau gave her soul to Marie. Bruno Pratico also with a strong performance (my impression is that Sulpice has more stage time than the main characters). All supporting cast was amazing.
So why I wasn’t too excited about the night? The main reason is the opera itself. Musically speaking, there are around 4 arias, one of two duets and trios. The performance started at 7:30 and it was over by 10:20. Maybe there was 30 minutes of music during this time. This is not Elisir or Lucia. It is a minor opera and from them to make such a production from this opera is like squeezing water from a stone. And there was JDF. I could verify in person something that I knew from his videos: his voice is one-dimensional with no body. A little bit of weight wouldn’t hurt. His high Cs just didn’t move me. I know that I am against the tide, but what can I do?

I’m just not a fan of Donizetti, sadly. I do think this performance came together better than the recent Lucia or Elisir, but it is an even sillier opera than either of those two.

Perhaps I was the only one who didn’t like the set for the second act. Half of the action took place off the constructed floor, making interactions between the singers awkward.
The crowd was extremely enthusiastic at the performance I attended, with hearty applause after every song.

Sometimes we need a bit of cotton candy. I found the production charming. Yes, it’s slight but we will probably see it again as SFO is becoming an Italian house again.

It was very much like the opera sets for Merola over the summer this year. There was some awkwardness in definition of space in that second act.

It is a charming production, though if we get it again soon I’m going to have to find a score.
