Molly-fillmore * Notes *
Last Friday Molly Fillmore replaced Nadja Michael as San Francisco Opera‘s penultimate performance of Salome this season. Evidently Michael had a throat infection, and Fillmore had to be flown in from Phoenix. I was not in attendance, but by all accounts, Ms. Fillmore sang well, she was less flat than Michael. However, her acting was less convincing, as was her movement, and I heard she may have had some trouble with a veil.

I believe I heard Molly Fillmore at the piano dress rehearsal on October 10th, as the person singing Salome that day was certainly not Michael. Luisotti and someone else both told her “Good job, Molly” at the end of the rehearsal. A good portion of the rehearsal was taken up by Maestro Luisotti trying to place the sawed-off bell of a sousaphone to best effect for Greer Grimsley’s off-stage singing. Luisotti did not want to use non-acoustic amplification, and he worked with Giuseppe Finzi to get it just right.

Obviously, it was a piano rehearsal, so take my comments on all this with a grain of salt. Not everyone sang out, particularly because there was another Salome rehearsal that evening with the orchestra. Fillmore did not project youth, her hands were dead, and she fiddled with her costume. All understandable given that she probably had very little rehearsal time. The Dance of the Seven Veils was skipped over. Fillmore’s singing was a bit shrill at the top of her tessitura. She was quite loud, and her intonation was good. Fillmore sings Salome at Arizona Opera on November 14 and 21.

Rehearsals can be very goofy. It was charming to hear the back and forth between Luisotti and Finzi. Kim Begley did some very funny ballet moves at one point as well.

Fillmore was basically solid: warm vibrato, steady technique, good pitch, good interpretive ideas (she really seemed like a teenager). My one quibble is that her voices is a size too small for the house, and I was, if not straining to hear hear, there was definitely some effort involved. The dance was a little clumsy, but apparently she learned it around Five Pm the day of the performance. Still, I’d count it a success, and I’d like to hear what she can do when she has more time to prepare than three hours.

Interesting. I found her very loud but that’s probably because no one else was singing out as much as she was and there was only piano.

The reason anyone may have had a trouble hearing the singers in the Friday show was Luisoti’s allowing the orchestra to blast away. Odd that one has no problems hearing Kim Begley at the Met, but he couldn’t be heard here.
I doubt Ms. Fillmore would have expected a piano dress to be considered a performance for review, I doubt she had time to do anything but concentrate on working her way around a stage she hadn’t stepped on before.
After googling her, it looks like it was a debut in this repertoire, first time as Salome, first in this house. Judging from the response from the Friday crowd it would seem to be a major achievement. Upstairs tenor’s point about wanting to see her something with regular prep is absolutely true, there may be some major potential here.

Absolutely this should not be considered a real review, just general comments on what I saw and heard during what was a working rehearsal. I think she has great potential and it sounds like she did an excellent job on Friday.

I would love to have heard a different singer. We had such a huge difficulty with Michael’s consistent flatness that we left as bows began (which I nevernevernever do). It was a real pleasure to have met you in the Opera Shop, and I apologize for my lack of social skills (having been raised by wolves). I wish I could look as charming as you do in vintage!

    Keikobad –
I agree about Luisotti’s conducting. I think he needs a production or two to get his SALOME under control. But Fillmore’s voice was too small for the house.

I can definitely understand, intonation bothers certain people and not others.
It was lovely to meet you as well. Thanks for stopping by and saying hello!

I saw Molly Fillmore’s Salome last night and she was excellent. She had simple choreography and a well put together set of veils. More importantly, she sang the music well with well controlled tones and a pleasant tone. Her voice is plenty big enough for the 3000 seat halls in AZ.
