Matías Tarnopolsky announced Cal Performances‘s 2010-2011 season at a press conference today. We were seated on the stage and the presentation involved several videos. Tarnopolsky seemed charmingly self-effacing, and at one point he said Schumann” instead of “Stockhausen,” and made a joke about how they were easily confused for one another. The 2010-2011 Web site of Cal Performances goes live tonight at 12:01am.

Next season includes two Britten operas, The Rape of Lucretia and Albert Herring will be performed by Castleton Festival Opera in February 2011. Byrn Terfel and Jonas Kaufmann are both coming to Berkeley for their respective tours, Terfel in the Fall and Kaufmann in the Spring. Dawn Upshaw, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, The Australian Chamber Orchestra, and Peter Sellars are all involved in Ojai North!

I am sad to see they don’t have a vocal recital category anymore. Lieder recitals in the Bay Area are sadly not very well attended these days. Also, no offense to Dawn Upshaw fans, but why must she sing here every year? I would rather have the opportunity to hear someone else.
Very very excited that Jonas Kaufmann will be singing here. Also intrigued by the Britten operas, though the singers are mostly unfamiliar names. Ian Bostridge with Les Violins du Roy could be interesting. And the Vienna Phil….
OT, do you know when SF Performances is planning to make their season announcement?

What will the Vienna Philharmonic play? I could never imagine to see this orchestra in Berkeley…

Hate to parade my appalling ignorance, but do we know what Wallace Shawn will do? And, were one to go see him, would one be able to resist thinking, “Inconceivable!” constantly?

SF Performances announces their season on May 11th, I believe.

Incredibly, they are performing 3 programs:
    1) Schubert’s Second, Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde, and Bartok’s The Miraculous Mandarin
    2) Schumann’s Second and Brahms’ Second
    3) Mahler’s Sixth

I bet it is part of the Strictly Speaking series. O yes, indeed, it was very odd to see his photo circulating along with the other performers on the screen before the announcement.

Thanks for posting this so quickly OT. I was delighted by the diversity and richness of the classical music offerings and delighted that Cal Perfs is bringing what sound like fresh productions of interesting operas. (With Cal Perfs and LA Opera, next March is Britten month in California!) Alas, it seems that Tarnopolsky is relying on fairly limited and unimaginative forces for the rest of the programming. There is a bit of wonder in the season, but I found much of it ho-hum at best. Presenters like BAM in NYC and others are doing such interesting dance and theater — what gives with Cal Performances? I’m sad that Cal Perfs and SF Perfs are so focused on classical music. Oh, and Alex Ross back again and talking about his new book — HOORAH!

I guess I am just so oriented toward classical music, because I’m very excited for next season at Cal Performances! Plus there are circuses and mimes. However, I see your point, not a lot of dance companies we haven’t seen in previous years coming around, with the exception of the Royal Danish Ballet.
