Das-rheingold * Notes *
The final dress rehearsal of San Francisco Opera‘s Das Rheingold (Mark Delavan, Jennifer Larmore, Tamara Wapinsky, Charles Taylor, and Jason Collins pictured left; photo from the 2008 production by Terrence McCarthy) was yesterday. Nearly 70% of the cast has changed from the opening San Francisco performances of this production three years ago, so it was fascinating to watch how things have developed thus far. Many of the projections have been changed, but the essentials remain the same.

I find the aesthetic of the Gods in Francesca Zambello’s production very amusing for some reason. When Donner is to clear the air with his hammer, marked “Ein starker Blitz entfährt der Wolke; ein heftiger Donnerschlag folgt.” in the score, I could not stop giggling. Something about how this is staged is simply hilarious.

My program didn’t say Jennifer Larmore, so that must be from the other time it played.

Really? I thought they only had one Fricka in 2008. Or do you mean the program from this year? The press photos for this year’s weren’t up yet when I posted.

Charlise….you know, I smiled at that line too…was Francesa being “ironic”? Were you at the “Walkure” rehearsal a few nights back? As the “Walkure” “parachuted” in….I happened to glimpse up at the titles screen (trying NOT to look to practice my Deutsch)….and they had inserted “Kill the Wabbit, Kill the Wabbit”! Too funny! I forgot to look last night – too caught up in it all…but as no one laughed in the audience, I assume it was removed!
    Wasn’t last night wonderful!!!!

That is hilarious! I tend not to look at the supertitles when I am in the orchestra, but sometimes I catch them from balcony standing room, since they are in my line of sight. Robin, the singing in the final dress was unbelievable, I agree.
