Sf-opera-walkuere-final-scene-2010 * Notes *
If yesterday’s final dress rehearsal of San Francisco Opera‘s Die Walküre (Mark Delavan and Nina Stemme pictured left; photo from the 2010 production by Cory Weaver) is any indication, the cast is disconcertingly strong. Given how gorgeous last year’s Walküre was, the promise of an even better run now is remarkable.

The traffic getting to the Bay Bridge heading west was heavy, as someone suspected of being under the influence of alcohol threatened to jump from the upper deck.

Did not see the final dress of Walkure…
Last year, I was more impressed by the Hunding than I was by Delavan. He was certainly competent, but his performance did not grip me.
Not that any other Wotan I’ve seen in living memory has ever really gripped me, but I keep waiting for it to happen.
Saw Hans Hotter do it many years ago, and I remember it well, but I was not experienced enough at that time in things Wagnerian to really assess the performance. It was late in his career.
Also saw Jon Vickers do Siegmund (probably the same performance), and have yet to hear anything like him since.
If you can’t demand the absolute very best from a Wagner performance, what can you demand the very best from?
I’ll be seeing the third cycle and one extra Siegfried. Will hope to be impressed.

re: traffique — I also heard there was a vehicle in flames on the Bay Bridge, rather upsetting yet appropriate for anyone on their way to see Die Walküre.
Must nod in assent about the singing!! What on earth (or in Walhalla) do we have in store? The mind reels, delirious.

I wish I could have heard Hans Hotter live, goodness!
    Hope you enjoy the performances.
