Sfopera-goetterdaemmerung-prologue2 * Notes *
Der Ring des Nibelungen at San Francisco Opera came to a spectacular conclusion with Götterdämmerung (Prologue pictured left, photo by Cory Weaver) today. The orchestra played beautifully for Maestro Donald Runnicles. There were only two or three sour moments, and even these were fleeting and did not detract from the overall brilliance of the performance. The horn and harp were striking. The music of Siegfried’s funeral march was incredibly moving, as was the very end of the opera. The chorus sounded strong and the greeting of Gunther and Brünnhilde was gorgeous.

The principal singers gave performances consistent with their previous ones, only with greater focus and intensity. Stacey Tappan, Lauren McNeese, and Renée Tatum may have looked like they had seen better days as the Rhinemaidens, but they sounded great. They held it together for the wild part of the music that starts with “So weise und stark verwähnt sich der Held.” Ronnita Miller, Daveda Karanas, and Heidi Melton were memorable as the Norns, each voice distinctive, but singing together. Daveda Karanas also made the Waltraute/Brünnhilde scene in Act I very human and believable. Andrea Silvestrelli was menancing as Hagen, singing with force and richness. Ian Storey was only overwhelmed a few times as Siegfried, his voice has warmth and was particularly effective in Act III. Nina Stemme was truly a wonder as Brünnhilde, going from strength to strength.

Every seat was sold, and even standing room was at capacity. I heard there were altercations in the balcony over places at the rail. It was noted that the person seated in the balcony with the service dog was late today, and her dog was allowed to roam freely around the standing area.

As for the orchestra level, there was the usual talking, laughing, clapping, and electronic noise. People were all too amused by the remote control used in the first scene of Act II.

my favorite audience moment of the entire ring: one enthusiastic fan in row Z began to clap tentatively as the curtain fell, only to be roundly shushed because the final chord was still sounding.

Actually, the so-called service dog wasn’t wandering around. He was laid out on the ground right behind the balcony standees and kept banging the backs of our legs with his wagging tail. Guess he liked his Wagner. Wanted to strangle his/her owner, however, who was obviously pulling a scam around the whole concept of a “service” animal.

I was upstairs for bit and saw the Service dog too…but, I was actually moved by his sweetness…he ultimately lay down, stretched out (behind the standees) and went to sleep…..I wished I could have taken a photo.
I was downstairs for ACT III – someone gave me a ticket)…and it was thrilling to hear the buzz of excitement from all those around me before the curtain rose. I love what upstairs tenor said…. I was already in tears after Siegfried’s Funeral March….then Nina’s final Immolation Aria just destroyed me with it’s power and beauty…BUT…the audiences sshhing the over-exuberent person before the curtain actually came down was wonderful!!!!!
I will be going through “Ring-withdrawl” now…it was lovely to have a real “Ring” a week for a month!
Thnak you for reporting almost daily….you captured everything perfectly! See you in the Autumn! (Rehearsals begin in late August!)

Sad to say that I was one of those involved in a standing room altercation. So much drama yesterday! It all worked out in the end.
I was unlucky to have the most uncouth audience members EVER standing behind me. Constant guffawing throughout the performance, loud chattering during the orchestral interludes, never-ending throat clearing…. truly wrath-inducing!
Still, I was so happy to be there. And Nina Stemme! Unreal. Incredible.

How very odd! I don’t really understand why latecomers are allowed even in the standing area, they can be so disruptive.

That is sort of cute. At least there was no barking this time!
I’m glad you got to see the last act. It was incredible!
I’m completely exhausted from a whole month of the Ring, and I’m sure you are too! We didn’t even sing or play, I can’t imagine how the musicians must feel!
Tried my best, and thanks so much for your support, Robin.

Glad to hear it worked out in the end. It will be nice when standing room goes back to normal in September!
It will be hard to hear another Ring soon, I think. Wow!

I had a seat yesterday (only one in 8 performances) It was top left corner of balcony–must have been best seat in house! loved every minute and am suffering severe withdrawal. it was a fabulous 3 weeks. Bravi Tutti! and to all my fellow standees, it was a blast. hope to see you more soon.
