According to a press release issued today, Bryan Hymel (pictured left, photograph by Dario Acosta) will sing the role of Aeneas in the remaining performances of the Met's Les Troyans this season, replacing Marcello Giordani, who has withdrawn the role from his repertoire. Giordani will return to the Met for Francesca da Rimini in March 2013.

“Withdrawn the role from his repertoire” is an interesting reaction to the myriad of terrible reviews Mr Giordani received for this production. Why the Met continues to employ him after his disastrous Calef of a few years ago remains a mystery….

I’ve heard bits and pieces of Hymel in the Royal Opera’s Les Troyens and was impressed. I’m eager to get our Les Troyens in a few years and hope to see/hear him in it.
