I’m thrilled about the Dido/Bluebeard’s double bill. Smart programming, promising Frankfurt productions, and I happen to adore both operas. Hooray!

I’m not too interested by the lineup this year. Saw Bluebeard’s Castle with Sam Ramey and Denyce Graves in the Friedkin production (which was great), but not anxious to see the opera again (also not familiar with Dido and Aeneas). Not a fan of the Catan work. I’ve seen LA’s Marriage of Figaro production twice with everyone from Sir Thomas Allen and Frederica Von Stade to Barbara Bonney in the main roles, and that’s enough. Glad that “The Ghosts of Versailles” will finally be produced by a west coast opera company. So I might splurge on that. I thought there were rumors of a Korngold opera (Die Tote Stadt) but apparently those turned out not to be true.
Some of the casts of the operas this year are underwhelming. But there is a noticeable wide open spot in May after Hercules vs Vampires. Will there possibly be a surprise announcement later this year along the lines of Renee Fleming in Previn’s A Streetcar Named Desire being added late for May, 2014?LikeLike
