ShilvockSCR1537photoCoryWeaverMatthew Shilvock (pictured left, photograph by Cory Weaver) has been named General Director of San Francisco Opera and will become the Company's seventh director on August 1, 2016 with a five-year contract through July 2021. Mr. Shilvock is currently SF Opera's Associate General Director since 2010 and has been with the Company since 2005.

    It looks like we may get another 1000 productions of Madama Butterfly and half-baked world premieres. I hope for the best. But I’m not sure the Gockley regime has been an artistic triumph and it seems it’ll continue.

    There is something nice about that! I hope to see what Mr. Shilvock’s point of view is, but I suppose not for a few seasons, since Gockley has programmed through 2016-17.

    I suspect you might be right. We will have at least two more world premieres after this season that Gockley is responsible for, the Bright Sheng in 2016 and a new Heggie piece after that.

    I wish Mr. Shilvock the best. There’s no pleasing everyone. The last time SFO hired from within was Mr. Kurt Adler and we all know how he’s remembered in SFO history. I hope we are looking at another golden era.
