Tenor Pene Pati (pictured), originally scheduled to sing Roméo in the October 1 Roméo et Juliette at San Francisco Opera, will now sing all the performances starting with opening night this Friday. He replaces Bryan Hymel, who has withdrawn for personal reasons.

Just two days ago Hymel posted about performing R&J on Facebook. Wonder what happened. (But of course “personal reasons” means “not my business.”

A young Pavarotti. That was my first, second and last impression. I have been waiting for another great voice, crystalline and breathtaking in clarity and knowledge at last brought to us by the marvelous, wonderful Mr. Pene Pati. I shall always remember his power, depth, and sympathy; a charging lion to an affectionate purring cat; enthralling. I am so honored to have heard this master sing. I thank him with all my heart.
