A new season of San Francisco Opera did not open with the scheduled Simon Boccanegra last night, as the orchestra went on strike. Today’s Free Opera In The Park is also cancelled.
The musicians of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra let their intentions to strike on opening night known on August 27 and the opera company in turn postponed opening night festivities to November.
The cancellation was not unexpected, but many people did show up, including the press, as tickets were confirmed the day before. The decision to cancel came at the last moment, only 35 minutes before curtain. General Director Matthew Shilvock gave the announcement from the stage, expressing his disappointment.
