Schumannheinkerda San Francisco Opera is holding a costume contest today before the matinée performance of Die Walküre. The contest involves dressing up as characters from Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen. The judges include David Gockley, Kristina Flanagan, Christopher Verdosci, and Terri Stuart.

The potential for utter ridiculousness seems pretty high here. Though sophisticates such as John Marcher and Axel Feldheim are certain not to partake in such silliness, I will be making some sort of attempt to participate.

I would lend you my horned helmet and cuirasse were I but nearer (went as Brunhilde for Halloween once: no one got it >sigh<). I second the request for photos!

Even the General Director of SF Opera took my photo with his mobile phone. I have never been so photographed in my whole life. Will of course post some once I get them.

That is very sweet of you! I was Erda, which is sensible given how low my voice is. 🙂

I have no idea why Mr. Marcher & myself were singled out for abuse in this blog post, but a link to some photographic evidence is now available on my blog:

You made an outstanding appearance. The bar for “utter ridiculousness” has now indeed been set quite high.

I KNEW you would be participating! I was “working” – of course, and never had a chance to get out and cheer you on! You made a wonderful “Erda”! Did you get down to the canteen at all? John M was there, photographing archival costumes – but he also managed to snap a lot of the Walkure cast. I know he would have liked to snap you in this costume….
Most of the cast “hung” around during various parts of the performance….Nina came down for a “snack” before she went out for ACT II.

    You know perfectly well why!
Thank you for the photos. I am a bit worried about this marked absurdity escalation.

Herr Feldheim is of course right, but at least he had the presence of mind to attend the event as well as document it.
Now I must bear the epithet alone as sadly I missed this absurdity, which truly has now been raised to a level that I for one cannot envision being surpassed.
