The second cycle of SF Opera’s 2011 Ring closed with a Gotterdammerung immolation scene in which Nina Stemme’s Brunnhilde was nothing short of magnificent. Stemme’s spectacular singing and fine acting brought an excellent Ring to a really memorable conclusion. Other notable contributions in the second cycle: Mark Delevan’s Wotan in Walkure, Jay Morris’ Siegfried in Siegfried, Andrea Silvestrelli’s Hagen in Gotterdammerung. While I have mixed emotions about the Zambello production, I do think the acting was better across-the-board than any Ring I have seen. The orchestra generally sounded very good under Donald Runnicles, but sometimes was too loud for the voices.

The second cycle did go a lot more smoothly!
